Chapter Thirty-Two

Dax awoke slowly, his head throbbing.

He started to sit up until he heard Rochelle’s voice. “I think you need to rest a little longer. He said that it might hurt for a while.”

Dax blinked. Rochelle was seated at his desk. They were in his room.

“How did I get back here?”

“Desmond’s a little stronger than he looks, and he wanted to make sure that you got back here safely.”

“Did he place anything in my room?”

Rochelle looked around. “I don’t think so. Would I have known?”

“I don’t know, but he has strange essence, and strange control over it, so I just want to make sure that he didn’t place anything here that was going to monitor me.”

“Why would he want to monitor you?”

Dax shook his head again, but it hurt too much to do that. He squeezed his eyes shut tightly, then took a deep breath, focusing. “I… Well, I don’t even know. He knows things about essence, doesn’t he?”

“That’s what my grandfather’s friend claimed. She told me that he probably would know things, and that he might be able to help you gain an understanding of your essence. I didn’t realize that was what he was intending, nor did I realize that he was going to try to somehow hurt you in the process—at least initially. I just thought that he would be able to answer your questions and help you learn how to maximize your essence so that you might use it for class.”

Dax breathed out. Once again, he began to focus on his essence, but this time, he couldn’t feel if there was anything different about it. There was a hint of it, but that was it—he didn’t feel it the same way as he had before. Always in the past, he had known his essence was buried deep inside of himself, as if there was some balled-up bit of energy there. In this case, as he focused, he was aware of it, but he wasn’t aware of how the essence was shaped, nor could he really feel it like he had before. Instead, what he felt was something diffused.

He tried to extend his own awareness, using the faint tendril of control that his mother had taught him to try to find the essence trapped within himself, but even as he attempted to do so, he could not separate it. It was almost as if…

“It’s merged,” he said, his mouth suddenly going dry.

“What?” Rochelle leaned forward, and she touched his arm, which Dax was tempted to jerk away from, but he resisted that. She was a healer, wasn’t she? And if there was anything that she might be able to find out about what had happened to him, then he needed to know, especially now—especially as he had no idea what it was that the other man had done to him.

“My essence. It’s merged. It’s different than it was before.”

“How is it so different?”

“To be honest, I don’t even know. I can feel it. And I’m aware of it, but I can’t tell how he did it.
